How to arrange home care on the Fylde Coast: a step-by-step guide

When a parent, partner or friend starts to struggle at home, it can be hard to know where to begin. The good news is that arranging home care is usually more straightforward than people expect. Here is a simple guide for families in Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and across the Fylde Coast.

1. Think about what help is needed

Make a note of the things that have become difficult. It might be getting washed and dressed, preparing meals, remembering medication, keeping the house clean, or feeling lonely. Notice the times of day that are hardest. This will help any care provider understand the situation quickly.

2. Talk to the person who needs care

Wherever possible, involve your loved one in every decision. Home care works best when the person receiving it feels in control of when visits happen and what help they receive.

3. Check how care can be funded

Care can be paid for privately, or your local authority may help with the cost after a needs assessment and financial assessment. In Blackpool that is Blackpool Council, and in Fylde and Wyre it is Lancashire County Council. You may also be entitled to benefits such as Attendance Allowance. Our paying for care page explains the options.

4. Choose a registered care provider

All home care agencies providing personal care in England must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Check a provider's latest CQC rating, ask who will carry out the assessment, how carers are trained and supervised, and how often care plans are reviewed.

5. Arrange an assessment

At Farrell Healthcare, every new client receives a free assessment at home by a qualified nurse. We talk through needs, health conditions, routines and preferences, and look at safety in the home. Family members are welcome to join.

6. Agree a care plan and start date

Your care plan sets out exactly what support will be given and when. Once it is agreed, care can begin. We review plans regularly, so support can increase or decrease as needs change.
