Changes in a loved one's health or abilities often happen gradually, so they can be easy to miss, especially if you do not live nearby. Here are some common signs that an older relative may benefit from support at home.
1. The fridge and cupboards tell a story
Out-of-date food, very little fresh food, or the same meal every day can suggest that shopping and cooking have become difficult.
2. Weight loss or poor appetite
Clothes that look looser, or a lack of interest in meals, can be a sign of poor nutrition, low mood or an underlying health problem.
3. Missed medication
Full blister packs, confusion about tablets or repeat prescriptions not being collected are worth paying attention to.
4. Changes in personal hygiene
Wearing the same clothes for several days or not bathing as often may mean that washing has become tiring, painful or worrying.
5. A home that is harder to keep on top of
Piles of laundry, unopened post or a less tidy home can suggest that housework has become too much.
6. Falls, bumps and bruises
Unexplained bruises, or mentions of a "little trip", may mean that mobility and balance are changing.
7. Memory problems
Repeating questions, missing appointments or getting lost on familiar routes can be early signs of memory problems. Encourage a visit to the GP.
8. Loneliness and withdrawal
Losing interest in hobbies or seeing friends less can affect wellbeing. Regular companionship visits can help.
Starting the conversation
Choose a calm moment, focus on what your relative wants to keep doing, and present help as a way to stay independent for longer. A small amount of support, like a weekly home help visit, is often a comfortable first step. Our nurses are happy to talk things through with you and your relative.
