When night-time support is needed

Nights can be the hardest time. People living with dementia may become unsettled or wander, those at risk of falls may need help getting to the toilet, and people receiving end of life care may need comfort and repositioning. Family carers often find their own sleep suffers badly. Overnight care gives everyone peace of mind.

Sleeping night care

A sleeping night carer stays overnight in your home, helps you get ready for bed and is there if you need them. They will have their own room to rest in and can be woken occasionally to help, for example with a toilet visit or reassurance after a bad dream.

Waking night care

A waking night carer stays awake throughout the night. This is suitable when regular help is needed, such as frequent repositioning, continence care, medication at set times, or close monitoring for someone who is very unwell or receiving palliative care.

Nurse-led planning

A qualified nurse will assess your needs during a free assessment and help you decide whether sleeping or waking nights are right. Your plan is reviewed regularly, and overnight care can be combined with daytime visits, end of life care or respite care.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sleeping night and a waking night?

A sleeping night carer rests in your home and can be woken occasionally if you need help. A waking night carer stays awake all night and is suited to people who need regular help or close monitoring.

Can overnight care be short-term?

Yes. Some families use overnight care for a few nights after a hospital stay or during a period of illness, while others need it on an ongoing basis.

Does the carer need their own room?

For sleeping nights the carer will need somewhere comfortable to rest, ideally a spare bedroom. For waking nights a comfortable chair close by is usually enough. We will discuss this at your assessment.
